To become a qualified judge (BJCP Recognized Judge or above), one is required to pass two exams – the online Entrance Exam and the Judging Exam.
Step 1 – The BJCP Entrance Exam
The BJCP Entrance Exam is an online exam administered by BJCP. It consists of 200 questions that you need to complete within 60 minutes. The questions are a mixture of True-False (TF), Multiple-Choice (MC), and
Multiple-Choice-Multiple-Answer (MCMA) formats.
You can take the entrance exam at any time; no advance registration is required. The cost is US$10 for 1 attempt, or US$20 for 3 attempts.
The official information pack for Entrance Exam can be found here.
Step 2 – The BJCP Judging Exam
Upon passing the BJCP Entrance Exam, you will have one year in which to take the BJCP Beer Judging Exam, otherwise you will have to retake the Entrance Exam.
The Judging Exam consists of completing scoresheets for six beers served at 15 minute intervals – a total of 90 minutes is allowed for this examination. The fee is US$40 for the first time takers of this examination, and US$15 for retakes.
Hong Kong BJCP organizes Judging Exams in Hong Kong for aspiring judges in the area.
